I wasn’t really fond of today’s writing prompt, so I shuffled through some previous ones and this one just about reached out of the monitor and grabbed my heart! It was: “can you imagine a life with no music?” No music! I can’t even!

I grew up listening to all kinds of music between my two parents’ households (they divorced when I was about 3). Old school country (dad) and all genres of rock from early days forward (mom). I started learning to play the flute when I was 11 and literally taught myself how to play any sheet music I could get my hands on.

All through school, I was a “band geek” and proud of it. We marched in the extreme heat of summer and freezing cold of Thanksgiving Day games and Christmas parades. We had all kinds of holiday concerts and played for the drama club’s plays. I have so many fond memories of my middle- and high-school years that are steeped in music.
Think about it – how many memories in your life are tied to songs? I hear an “old school” song on the radio and I am transported back to high school, or younger, and how I was feeling in that moment years ago. Wedding songs. Songs played at funerals. Hell, I can even remember songs that came out when my daughter was born 23 years ago and I remember moments with her as an infant.
So, in conclusion, I could never imagine a life without music. Music brings so many powerful feelings and such purpose to this crazy thing called life.
