Penny for your thoughts…

When I first heard a few months back that the U.S. Government was no longer going to make the penny I was like, okay, cool but are stores going to change their pricing structures to only have prices ending in 5’s or 0’s? So far, I haven’t seen any changes – everything still ends in 0.99 or 0.49. How exactly is this going to work??

After some brief research, it appears that companies are not changing prices as of yet. Instead, they are either short-changing themselves or the customer to round to the nearest nickel. This is completely absurd and I think companies need to update their pricing structures and should have done so with the announcement that the mint was no longer producing pennies. I am interested to see how this goes. What are your thoughts on the penny?

i did not know about this! wow! i am not sure how to feel about this as this is the reverse of decimalization that we experienced in wall street in the early 2000s.

    1. Right? It’s crazy to me. I’m hoping businesses wise up and try not to make it harder on the consumer.

that’s exactly what i was thinking! to think that prices could be raised in increments of .05 – that’s insane. but i’m hoping that because of that, there’ll be a concerted move for vendors to go in between. but then what’s the point if that’s where it’s going to go back to right??? lol. i don’t know what these people are thinking unless it’s some grand cost cutting measure to save copper.

      2. It costs more to make the penny than what it’s worth. That’s what I read anyway.

  2. It’s been in the works for a while. They want to move to card/digital payment. The infrastructure is still not there and many prefer cash. I’m glad I hoarded pennies, as the value of the metals and symbolism is worth much more than 1 cent.

    1. More people pay with cards but that’s not the point.

  3. I read that it costs more than five cents to make a nickel, for whatever that’s worth.
